Step 1: Establish Your Marketing Goals
To be able to achieve things, you first have to know what you want to achieve! So you want to list out exactly what you want your marketing to get you. To work this out, think about where you want to be in 3 months, or 6 months time.
Step 2: Define Your Niche And Specialty
Who do you specialize in helping and what do you help them with, that makes you stand out from the other MT's in your area? The more detail you can include here, the easier your marketing becomes.
For example, "Expectant mothers with other children, who don't work. Their spouse makes at least $70,000 per year. They experienced back pain in their previous pregnancies and wish to avoid that this time and are willing and able to pay for it."
Step 3: List The Benefits Of Working With You
List out all the benefits of having one of your massages, from the point of view of your clients. If you're unsure what they are - ask your existing clients what they get from your massages.
Remember, benefits are very different from features! Features are things like the techniques you use, where you graduated, what qualifications you have etc. Whereas benefits are directly what's in it for your client. For example, reduced stress, less pain, decreased swelling, increased range of motion (for athletes) etc.
People buy on benefits, so your marketing has to describe the benefits of working with you.
Step 4: Set Your Budget
Decide up front how much money and how much time you want to spend on your marketing each month. This will give you an idea of which marketing tools are best for you.
Step 5: Select The Marketing Tools That Are Best For You
Pick the tools that fit your budget, appeal to your specific audience and niche market, and go with your personality.
If you have loads of time, and not much money to spend, avoid magazine advertising and select tools like giving free talks, networking, distributing fliers around your neighborhood etc. However, if you have money to spend and very little time, pick tools like a website, PR, fliers you can pay someone else to distribute for you etc.
Make sure you are comfortable doing each of the tools you've picked, or you simply won't do them - unless you are committed to conquering your fears, (eg public speaking) and expanding your comfort zones.
Step 6: Write Out Your Action Plan
This is all the steps you're going to take, and when you're going to do them. How many talks are you going to give? How many fliers are you going to distribute? etc
Commit to doing something (however big or small) each week. It is little steps towards your goals that will make the biggest difference over time. Write your steps out on your calendar and stick to it at all costs.
Step 7: Track Your Progress
It is important to track your progress towards your goals and know where those extra clients are coming from.
This way you can stop using the tools that aren't bringing in the results, and do more of the ones that are getting you clients. It will also help motivate you to continue with what's working as you can actually see that you're getting more clients from it.
