Massage Oils - How to Make a Perfect Blend

Massage oils are a great way to enhance the beneficial effects of a massage therapy, they are looked as a must for a massage therapy session. The massage techniques have evolved in order to accommodate the use of oils. Choosing the right products, making a good blend that doesn't spoil in time might be a difficult task without the proper information.

There are a few reasons for using oils in a massage: facilitate the gliding over the skin thus avoiding superficial irritation, nourish the patient skin and promote health and absorption of the essential oils through skin and lungs.

A massage oil is usually a combination of two or more oils. The combination contains at least a base oil, the carrier, and one or more essential oils (aromatic oils). The base is an oil with a high skin penetration potential. The essential oil is chosen for its therapeutic effects and it is based on patient's need.

The carrier is a vegetable oil. When buying a carrier we have to search for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils. These two extraction methods ensure the oil is not polluted with solvents and is not degraded by high temperatures processing.

Most of the carrier oils can be stored in the sealed bottle for long periods. Once in contact with the air it starts the oxidation. If kept in dark containers at low temperatures the oxidation is slowed down. However some oils will deteriorate if stored in the fridge, check with the producer the proper storage conditions.

The most popular carrier oils are Grape-seed oil and Sweet Almond oil. Grape-seed oil is a very light oil and is very easy absorbed by the skin. Sweet Almond oil is very reach in vitamins with high therapeutic value.

Another excellent base is Olive oil because of its therapeutic qualities but is not very popular because of its strong fragrance.

Some other great base oils are: Apricot kernel, Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut, Hazelnut, Peach kernel, Sunflower.

Wheat-germ oil is an excellent adjuvant to any base because of its antioxidant properties. Wheat-germs oil added in proportion of 15% to any other base will prevent it to go rancid. Wheat-germs oil is a sticky oil so use it cautiously in your combinations.

The aromatic oils are plant extracts, (from flowers, roots, seeds, etc), with therapeutic properties. The aromatic oils are very concentrated and they are only used in combination with a base. The concentration should be about 3% essential oil in a base. Adding too much aromatic oil could irritate the patient skin as some of these are very potent.

Most of the aromatic oils are volatile, some of them will simply disappear in minutes if you forget the container open. As a general rule you have to keep them in sealed dark containers at low temperatures.

Each essential oil has its own healing properties. It is very important to know what these properties are in order to avoid harm. Using them improperly could worsen certain conditions.
Buying essential oils is a difficult task because of the lack of regulation in the industry. Very often your aromatherapy oils contain chemicals, fragrance enhancers, solvents to multiply the content, or oils extracted from similar plants but with different properties. None of these are marked on the bottle.

You can follow these guidelines when you are buying essential oils:

Look for therapeutic-grade oils, sometimes it's marked on the bottle;
Look for the scientific name of the plant, as sometimes the same common name of a plant could cover different botanical varieties;

Check if the plants were grown organically or wild-crafted - these are the best plants.
Check the reputability of the producer and question your supplier about their products.
Know that aromatherapy oils are not essential oils. Aromatherapy oils are usually a blend of essential and carrier oils or other components.

Use your smell, sometimes you can detect a problem product only by smelling it.Some excellent essential oils and their properties are: Chamomile - anti-inflammatory and sedative, Eucalyptus - respiratory problems, flu, skin infections; Frankincense - helps the intellect; Lavender - good sedative, heals burns, mood enhancer; Lemon - antiseptic, lowers blood pressure and good for skin conditions; it is extremely volatile; Peppermint - digestion, flatulence, flu; Pine - antiseptic, very effective treating respiratory problems; Rose - aphrodisiac and mood enhancer, very expensive oil.

When you blend your massage oil take in consideration the following facts:

Carrier oils go rancid and essential oil oxidize so make only what you use.
Massage oil has to be warm when you use it that will accelerate the alteration of your blend.
Your clients are different and have different needs, ask them what they like. Get feedback about the oil you use on your patient and don't use the same blend on all your clients.

Never use mineral oils, they are not absorbed by the skin and sometimes they can be harmful.
Do not use more than 3% to 4% of essential oil in your blend.

Avoid pre-blended massage oils if you are not sure about the date of fabrication, and exact content.

Avoid blending too many oils, simple is more effective.
Every person has their own preferences when it comes to essential oils, and that is based on their affinities and needs. Show your patient a sample of oil each time they come for a massage and note in their file what they like most.

My personal favorites are Frankincense, Lemon and Lavender. Frankincense has an important spiritual component while Lemon oil creates an oasis of freshness and intensifies all your senses. Lavender creates invisible bonds between people of opposite sex.

What is Acupressure Massage?

Acupressure is a technique that originated from China. It is sometimes confused with acupuncture. Acupuncture uses needles to stimulate acupoints. Whereas, acupressure uses movements and pressure to stimulate the pressure points. Acupressure is a combination of applying pressure to points and specific movements to help relieve discomfort and pain.

Acupressure is normally performed by using the hands, thumbs, elbows or mechanized equipment. These instruments are used to target the body's acupoints. It is not that when this pressure is applied to the acupoints, that it will unleash the body's natural pain relievers.

The body has natural painkillers called endorphins. Certain situations or stimulation can release these endorphins into the body. They help to kill the pain so the body can continue to function effectively. Many times athletes play injured because the endorphins are killing the pain during times of intensity.

Acupressure is noted to relieve discomfort when pressure is applied to specific areas. The discomfort is thought to be relieved due to increased blood circulation to the muscle. This also helps to relax the muscle and joints helping them retain flexibility.

This technique is also known to balance the body. Many times we retain stiffness in the body to stress. Stress causes tension leading to muscle fatigue and stiffness. Acupressure helps to relieve the immediate area and to help induce full body relaxation.

Acupressure is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles. According to these principles, energy current travels inside the body along invisible pathways. These pathways art known as the radiance and are thought to 14 pathways. These pathways interconnect our organs with other body parts.

The body is believed to get out of balance which causes blockages and energy. It is believed that the blockage of these greedy and pathways is what causes the ailments. Acupressure seeks to unblock the energy flow in the body.

Generally, acupressure is used directly on or around an area of discomfort or pain. The massage probes deeply into the muscle tissue. By working through the muscle tissue, it helps to restore elasticity. Muscles tend to get very stiff and hard.

Acupressure massage targets stiff areas in the body. It helps to penetrate into stiff muscle and joints. This helps to restore flexibility in the muscle. The muscles have a stiffness which needs to be overcome. Sometimes the initial penetration into the muscle can cause discomfort.

Realize that when your muscles are stiff, it will take some on doing to restore their flexibility. There is an initial threshold to cross where discomfort and pain is stemming from overcoming the stiffness. However, once you regain some flexibility, then the pain. And the muscle and joint will feel well again.

Acupressure is by no means a substitute for medical care. Although overcoming initial muscle stiffness can cause discomfort, he acupressure massage should never cause pain. Always seek your physician's advice before pursuing any type of alternative treatment.

You can receive an acupressure massage from a therapist or a massage chair. A therapist uses the specialize techniques and requires about an hour for the treatment. A massage chair also uses specialized techniques but can perform a full body massage in 15 to 20 minutes.

A reduction of tension in the body helps it to concentrate on being healthy and more immune to disease and sickness. When you are under stress, your body can be attacked much more easily. Re-balance your body and restore harmony with an acupressure massage treatment.

How to Give a Back Massage

This article will teach you how to give a back massage. You'll learn about some of the broad benefits of massage but most importantly you'll learn back massage techniques and how to give a back massage to your loved one to bring relief from the physical and emotional stresses of every day modern life. You'll also learn some great tips here as well.

Have you ever noticed that despite all the technological advances designed to save time and add convenience to our lives, we are busier and more stressed than ever? Accordingly there is an ongoing search for remedies to help bring us back into balance.

When you know how to give a back massage, you can apply a time tested and proven method to bring about soothing relief with great therapeutic value. It's one of the simplest, yet most loving and caring things you can do for a loved one.

Massage calms the mind, soothes the body, increases circulation, releases tension, tones the muscles and nourishes the skin, especially when using a quality massage oil like emu oil, or an aromatherapy blend.

Ok, now for some back massage techniques, here's how to give a back massage. Follow these simple steps.

• Have the person lie face down on a flat surface with their head to the side. It's also worth considering investing in a massage table. They are portable, inexpensive and are much better for your back as they allow you to massage at a comfortable height. They also provide a 'face hole' which prevents the receiver from getting a sore neck due to holding their head facing sideways.
• Begin by gently spreading oil over the back. If the oil is cold you can sit the oil container in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes, or you can pour it on your own hands and rub your hands together before applying to the back. You don't want to pour cold oil on a persons back unless you want a very startled and unhappy person!
• Give light strokes to the base of the neck, it's a very soothing and calming way to start. Then move your hands up and down along the length of the back in broad strokes. It warms and relaxes the muscles.
• Use the fleshy pads of your thumbs at the lower side of the shoulder blades, working your way up the contour of the blades to the base of the neck.
• Using your finger or thumb tips, or even you knuckles, apply pressure to the fleshy part at either side of the spine and work your way down, pressing at the level of each vertebrae. Remember to never place direct pressure on any bony part.
• Using the whole hands, use a broad kneading action to massage the lower back. Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints found among adults and this action will really soothe the area.
• Work your way up the back with this kneading action until you reach the shoulders. Use your fingertips to locate muscle knots which present themselves as a hardened lump of muscle where tension is stored. Apply static pressure, or press with small circular motions onto the knots until the tension is relieved but be sensitive the persons comfort level. Always listen for feedback.
• Now for the shoulders. This is another area where many people store their stress and this will be evident when you feel the tightness that you may find there. Using your hands over the top of the shoulders along side the neck, knead the muscles until you feel they are warm and loose. Your goal is to release the tension. Be careful not to pinch though. Follow with broad gentle strokes from the neck out to the shoulders. It's very soothing.
• Finish up with more broad strokes up and down the length of the back, this time more gently, and if you like, with some swirling motions. End with very light strokes with the finger tips. The aim here is just to pamper and finish the massage with a very soothing, luxurious time.

Remember that your aims are to warm the muscle, release tension, and provide a relaxing and therapeutic experience. When applying back massage techniques, always be sensitive to the persons comfort levels and never put direct pressure onto a bony surface area. Lastly, the more you practice the better you will be.

Never underestimate the enormous value you can give after you have learned how to give a back massage.

The 7 Step Massage Marketing Plan

Step 1: Establish Your Marketing Goals

To be able to achieve things, you first have to know what you want to achieve! So you want to list out exactly what you want your marketing to get you. To work this out, think about where you want to be in 3 months, or 6 months time.

Step 2: Define Your Niche And Specialty

Who do you specialize in helping and what do you help them with, that makes you stand out from the other MT's in your area? The more detail you can include here, the easier your marketing becomes.

For example, "Expectant mothers with other children, who don't work. Their spouse makes at least $70,000 per year. They experienced back pain in their previous pregnancies and wish to avoid that this time and are willing and able to pay for it."

Step 3: List The Benefits Of Working With You

List out all the benefits of having one of your massages, from the point of view of your clients. If you're unsure what they are - ask your existing clients what they get from your massages.

Remember, benefits are very different from features! Features are things like the techniques you use, where you graduated, what qualifications you have etc. Whereas benefits are directly what's in it for your client. For example, reduced stress, less pain, decreased swelling, increased range of motion (for athletes) etc.

People buy on benefits, so your marketing has to describe the benefits of working with you.

Step 4: Set Your Budget

Decide up front how much money and how much time you want to spend on your marketing each month. This will give you an idea of which marketing tools are best for you.

Step 5: Select The Marketing Tools That Are Best For You

Pick the tools that fit your budget, appeal to your specific audience and niche market, and go with your personality.

If you have loads of time, and not much money to spend, avoid magazine advertising and select tools like giving free talks, networking, distributing fliers around your neighborhood etc. However, if you have money to spend and very little time, pick tools like a website, PR, fliers you can pay someone else to distribute for you etc.

Make sure you are comfortable doing each of the tools you've picked, or you simply won't do them - unless you are committed to conquering your fears, (eg public speaking) and expanding your comfort zones.

Step 6: Write Out Your Action Plan

This is all the steps you're going to take, and when you're going to do them. How many talks are you going to give? How many fliers are you going to distribute? etc
Commit to doing something (however big or small) each week. It is little steps towards your goals that will make the biggest difference over time. Write your steps out on your calendar and stick to it at all costs.

Step 7: Track Your Progress

It is important to track your progress towards your goals and know where those extra clients are coming from.

This way you can stop using the tools that aren't bringing in the results, and do more of the ones that are getting you clients. It will also help motivate you to continue with what's working as you can actually see that you're getting more clients from it.

Using Massages to Defeat Stress

Scientists have made important discoveries in regards to stress and health. In one famous study of those who had high stress and those who had a lower amount of stress (Type A and Type B), the first group was found to have much higher rates of heart disease and cancer, the number one killers of Americans in modern times. These conditions are something that most people would like to avoid, and the most significant away to fend them off is through the systematic reduction of stress. There are dozens of techniques for fighting stress, and these methods have been the subject of countless books and seminars.

One of the most ideal ways for defeating stress is through the use of massages. Not only does the pressure relieve the tension in one's body, but the continued stimulation and pleasure naturally relieves stress in your mind. This is not a coincidence, as the body is inexplicably linked to the mind, and there is a reciprocal determinism between both entities, so that they affect one another. Therefore, if the body is feeling good, the mind feels good, and vice versa.

Besides the physical benefits of a massage, part of the relief comes from the simple relaxation. When getting a massage, you do not need to worry about anything else other than feeling good, and that is certainly a great state of mind to have, albeit only for a little while. The combination of the freedom and pleasurable feelings reduce stress to a nonexistent level, and the reduced levels last for a good while after the massage is finished.

Benefits of Getting a Weekly Massage

There are many benefits to getting a massage on a regular basis. Besides just enjoying the pleasure, a wide variety of health and personal benefits exist that further support the notion of weekly massages.

Massage services can be somewhat expensive, but certain places will offer you discounts if you come often enough. Either that, or you can sign up for a plan that saves you money, which would be a lot more affordable than buying massages each time you come in. Depending on what business you go to, and if it is independently owned, you may be able to form a relationship with the owners and further drive down the price.

The primary benefit of weekly massages is the relief that is given to different parts of the body. Over the course of the week, tension builds in many places, and it can inhibit our daily activities. A massage relieves this physical stress and enables you to operate at an optimal level. This is invaluable in this fast-paced world, and you will find that the investment in massage services quickly pays off in the way you feel and the increased productivity you have.

Being productive is meaningless if we are not healthy, and there are tons of health problems out there that can bring us down at any moment. Massages stimulate portions of the body that are responsible for fighting off conditions, and having your body regularly recharged in this way is overall beneficial to your health. Most importantly, the positive feelings generated from massages reduces stress to an almost nonexistent level, and since stress is a major contributor to heart disease and cancer, this is certainly an important factor.

Getting a massage improves your focus, both after and during the massage. It enables you to think more clearly without having to worry about troubles that perpetually cross our minds. Experiencing clouded thinking can be very unpleasant and debilitating, and being free of this is quite liberating. For all these reasons and more, you should definitely consider a weekly massage, or at least one on a less frequent basis.
